TMI Products UTV Suspension Seats and Door Bags Interview
TMI Products has built a strong reputation in automotive interiors, and now the company is bringing that same engineering mindset into UTV suspension seats and UTV interior storage solutions. During AIM Expo earlier this year, we sat down withRoss Berlanga, Marketing Manager at TMI Products, to discuss how their experience translates into off-road environments and how UTV interiors continue to evolve.
From Garage Startup to Interior Manufacturer
TMI Products began in 1982 when the Tuccinardi brothers started building Volkswagen door panels in their family garage in Torrance, California. At the time, the VW scene was growing quickly, so demand for custom interiors followed.
Over time, the company expanded into a full-scale interior manufacturer. Today, TMI produces seating, door panels, consoles, headliners, and complete interior systems. In addition, the company maintains control over the entire process, from raw materials to final assembly.
Because TMI handles production in-house, the team can respond quickly to changes in the market while maintaining consistent quality. That same approach now carries into the UTV category.

Interview: Entering the UTV Market
What led TMI to expand into the UTV market?
We asked Ross Berlanga about TMI’s expansion into the UTV market and how their automotive background translates into off-road applications. However, UTVs introduce harsher conditions. Dust, vibration, and water exposure all demand a different level of durability.
How does UTV interior design differ from automotive?
Unlike street vehicles, UTVs operate in unpredictable environments. As a result, materials, stitching, and structural components must handle constant abuse. At the same time, comfort still matters because many riders spend long hours in the seat.
UTV Suspension Seats Explained

What makes a suspension seat different from a stock UTV seat?
UTV suspension seats reduce vibration and distribute weight more effectively. Because of that, drivers experience less fatigue during long rides. In addition, proper support helps maintain control in rough terrain.
What design elements matter most?
As discussed during the interview, TMI uses a helicopter-inspired suspension system to improve comfort in off-road conditions (2:22) This system improves damping and distributes load more evenly compared to traditional seat bases. At the same time, high-density foam and reinforced frames improve both comfort and durability. TMI also backs its seating systems with a one-year warranty, which reflects the company’s confidence in its materials and construction.

Choosing the Right UTV Suspension Seats
Low bolster seats focus on accessibility, while high bolster seats focus on support and control.
Low Bolster vs High Bolster
Low bolster seats allow easier entry and exit, which works well for utility riders and machines that require frequent stops. On the other hand, high bolster seats provide more lateral support, so they perform better in aggressive riding conditions.

Sport Pattern vs DD Pattern
Sport pattern seats offer a clean and simple design that is easy to maintain. In contrast, DD pattern seats use diamond stitching, which adds a more premium look and texture to the interior.
Harness Systems and Seat Integration
How do harness systems integrate with these seats?
TMI seats include integrated harness slots, so they work with factory belts as well as 4-point and 5-point systems. Because of that, riders can upgrade safety without modifying the seat structure.

What should riders look for in a UTV harness?
TMI highlighted several key features:
- compatibility with HANS and other restraint systems
- 2-inch and 3-inch polyester webbing for strength and comfort
- resistance to UV, water, and heat
- pull-down adjusters for quick fitment
- sewn-in shoulder padding for comfort
- push-button latch for simple operation
UTV Seat Fitment Across RZR, Maverick, and Xpedition
Polaris RZR Platforms
TMI supports a wide range of Polaris RZR models, including Pro R, Pro S, Turbo R, Turbo S, Pro XP, and XP series platforms from 2020-2026. Because these machines share similar seat mounting architecture, TMI can offer consistent solutions across multiple models.

Can-Am Maverick Platforms
TMI seating systems cover Maverick X3 and Maverick R models from 2017 through current production. While front and rear bucket seats share similar configurations, rear bench setups require different mounting solutions.
Polaris Xpedition
TMI also offers solutions for Polaris Xpedition XP 5 and ADV 5 platforms, 2025-current production year models. These machines focus on longer rides and expedition builds, so comfort becomes even more important.

UTV Door Bags and Storage Solutions

What role does storage play in modern UTV interiors?
Storage remains one of the biggest limitations inside a UTV. Riders often carry tools, radios, gloves, and personal items, so organization becomes critical.
What makes a good UTV door bag?
UTV door bags solve one of the biggest interior limitations on side-by-side platforms. A strong door bag must handle constant exposure to dust, water, and vibration. At the same time, it needs to remain easy to access while driving.
Zipper Design for Off-Road Environments
What challenges do zippers face in off-road use?
Traditional zipper systems struggle with fine dust, water intrusion, and constant vibration in off-road environments. Over time, these conditions lead to failure.
How did TMI approach solving that?
Later in the conversation, Ross also highlighted a new zipper system designed to resist dust and water intrusion (6:15). TMI developed a zipper system designed specifically for off-road environments. This design improves durability while maintaining smooth operation even in harsh conditions.

Building a Complete UTV Setup
A well-built UTV includes more than one upgrade. Instead, riders combine multiple systems to create a complete setup.
Seating and storage form the foundation of a comfortable interior. Suspension seats improve ride quality, while door bags and storage solutions help keep essential gear organized and within reach.
As builds progress, riders often focus on machine-specific upgrades for platforms like Polaris RZR accessories and Can-Am Maverick accessories, where interior and exterior components come together to improve both function and usability.
Visibility also plays a major role in a complete setup. Many riders upgrade to billet UTV side mirrors to improve sightlines on the trail, especially when navigating tight terrain or riding in groups.
At the same time, mounting solutions expand what a machine can carry. Accessories like UTV whip mounts, Rotopax mounts for UTV, and UTV fire extinguisher mounts allow riders to safely secure gear without sacrificing space inside the cab.
When these upgrades work together, the result is a more capable and better organized machine that performs well in both recreational and utility environments.
The Future of UTV Interiors
Where are UTV interiors heading next?
TMI expects continued growth in interior upgrades as machines become more advanced. Riders now demand the same level of comfort and functionality found in automotive builds. As a result, seating, storage, and integrated systems will continue to evolve together.
